The next meeting of the Caribbean Family History Group will take place this Saturday 26th June at 14.00-16.300hrs (BST)
As this falls within ‘Windrush’ week in the UK, we decided we would use this as the basis for our meeting. The MV Empire Windrush was the first ship that brought people from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and other islands, to help fill the post-war UK labour shortages. It docked in Tilbury on 22 June 1948. Other ships followed, as well as other and later means of transport – e.g. by plane, but this whole generation of travellers has become known as the ‘Windrush Generation’.

The meeting will be a share and discuss session. We will start things off with a look at the Shipping List of the MV Empire Windrush and then proceed with any stories or examples and records you have in your research that evidence migration. We are not limiting this to ‘Caribbean to UK’ travel, but to migration:
- from anywhere in the world into the Caribbean
- within the Caribbean
- from the Caribbean to anywhere in the world
As the list above shows – this is a massive subject area – of different location, language and administrative structure potentially – bringing inherent research challenges.
We are in no way suggesting we have extensive expertise in this subject area – but what we know, along with any examples or queries you bring, will be a great start to help or guide, as well as learn new something new.
