Thank you to all those who attended our research meeting yesterday afternoon. It was an inspiring and motivating meeting. Visitors were researching a variety of islands including St Kitts & Nevis, St Croix, St Thomas, Grenada, Jamaica, Cuba, Barbados, Panama. I am sure we all took inspiration from the successes of those present and it has motivated us to continue searching for that elusive ancestor and break through the brick wall.
Some reminders from the meeting:
- Website useful for translating documents: www.deepl.com
- If you have ancestors who served in BWI military and are looking for more information, send us an email with the details and we will pass to our military researcher
- Try to be organised when searching, keep records of where you have looked and what you have found to avoid duplication
- If your ancestor has links to a plantation, either as a manager or owner/similar, a lot of information can be found at: Legacies of British Slave ownership
- When searching on Family Search, use different spellings, names, combinations. One researchers said she had found a name spelt 7 different ways! Unfortunately errors often happen when documents are transcribed.
- We now have a Surname Interest page on our website. If you are a member, you can include surnames that you are searching for on our website. Someone may just see it and contact us! Please email with surname, island and parish.
- If you have a library card, you may be able to access Ancestry Library Edition through your local library online free of charge. Check your library website.
Enjoy researching your ancestors and finding those family members!
Our next meeting is on Saturday 27th February at 2.00pm GMT. Make a note in your diaries! If there is anything in particular you would like us to cover, please email: CFHG and we will do our best to include.
